Mixum is a very handy tool for mixing a number of different waveforms (or tracks) into a
single composition. You can mix any combination of audio tracks (multiple formats are supported), CD tracks,
MIDI tracks (multiple midi synthesizers are supported), or video (movie) tracks (AVI, WMV, ASF and MPG formats
are supported). All tracks can be played simultaneously.
The volume of each track can be scaled independently. The number of tracks that can mix is limited only by
your computer's capabilities, and the waveforms
can be in any format (16 bits, stereo, 22 kHz, or whatever). You can also specify what format the final
composition will be in. Mixum is able
to convert waveforms that use different samples per second, by using a streamlined method of interpolation.
Using Mixum is quite straightforward. You simply load in the tracks that you want to include, position them so that they have the desired timing, then press 'Record', and you're done. Setting the timing is accomplished either by dragging the wavefroms to the left or right, using the mouse, or using the "Snap to" control. Setting the desired timing is facilitated by auditioning selected portions of each track. You can also audition the final composition before saving it to disk. Mixum was designed by a group of successful professional musicians and by scientists trained at MIT in computer science and auditory physiology, and incorporates a number of original algorithms in digital signal processing which provide some powerful capabilities for the analysis and synthesis of music. The system was designed to be as intuitively simple and easy to use as humanly possible, and in addition to the standard features of recording and playback that are required by users interested in creating sound files for Multimedia applications, Mixum incorporates many advanced features of use to professional musicians interested in creating CD quality recordings.
